Insurance apology at flood error
AN insurance company which cancelled a homeowner’s policy because of the 1953 floods has apologised for what it says was an error.
A house and contents policy purchased from Saga by Christopher Petty-Mayor of Northumberland Crescent, Southchurch, was abruptly cancelled last month after he double checked the small print and decided to make sure the company knew about the floods which hit the area nearly sixty years ago.
Thinking it to be a formality, Mr Petty-Mayor was left astounded to be told his policy would be cancelled with immediate effect and the £327 he had paid for the policy would be refunded.
The company did not comment at the time, but have since made a statement.
Paul Green, head of communications at Saga, said: “It was human error that led to our underwriters cancelling Mr Petty-Mayor’s home insurance .
“Normally, when offering cover, our underwriters take into account a property’s individual circumstances.
“Mr Petty-Mayor’s declaration that there had been flooding in the past should have prompted further enquiries to ascertain the property’s particular risk.
